CME Presentation Nov 2012 (pdf)

The Cambridge-MIT Exchange

Started in 2000 the Cambridge-MIT Exchange was originally part of the Cambridge-MIT Institute which had primary goals to enhance the competitiveness, productivity and entrepreneurship of the UK economy by improving the effectiveness of knowledge exchange between university and industry, educating leaders and developing programmes for change in universities, industry and government. The exchange allows undergraduates from the two institutions could spend a complete academic year studying in the other country. Over the first 10 years students to a number or departments from both sides are involved in the exchange, with students from various years being involved. In Engineering the exchange takes place in the third year with MIT Juniors taking Part IIA of the Engineering Tripos and Cambridge students undertaking 7+ courses at MIT.

After the academic year 2010-11 the central funding for the the exchange was removed and as a result of support from BP coordination for the exchange at Cambridge moved to the Engineering Department. In the academic year 2012/13 there will be 15 places for students, who would normally be studying Part IIA of the Engineering Tripos, to spend the academic year at MIT (There may also be some additional places for students studying other Tripos, details will be circulated within department if places are available). MIT has separate Departments representing the major professional engineering activities and this year the exchange will involve the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Aero-Astro Engineering. In addition It is possible for exchange students to study courses outside their home department including some offered by the Sloan School of Management and Harvard University.

Cambridge students taking part in this exchange return to the UK with an MIT transcript with details of their course grades and are expected to complete their degree, for example by taking Part IIB of the Engineering Tripos just as if they had remained in Cambridge for their third year except that they will not be `classed' at the end of year 3. (Instead the CU transcript will indicate that the student has `deemed to have deserved honours'.)

Participating students will not be liable for any additional tuition fees by virtue of taking part in the Exchange. Each will receive a non-means-tested bursary to help cover the additional travelling and living expenses.

The Fall Semester of the MIT academic year begins in September and to participate students must be able to travel to Boston no later than mid August. The Spring Semester begins in early February and finishes mid May.
