Computer Operator

The Department’s Computer Operators, a team of three, provide a help desk and operational support for the Department’s main computing facilities. Working under the supervision of the Chief Computer Operator the role holder provides front-line computing support to all staff, students and visitors of the Department – the “friendly human face” of the IT Services Division and the first port of call for most computer-related support.

The Computer Operators occupy a room between the main Computer room and the main computer-based teaching area and are thus suitably located to provide a general service to the Department. Besides their help-desk function the Operators also provide vital computer system operational and user administration services to support the day to day running of the Department’s central IT infrastructure. This infrastructure is essential to all the Department’s activities, and mistakes by the Operators could seriously jeopardise its proper function for a significant time. The role holder has to process sensitive and confidential data and be responsible for its proper maintenance.

The role holder is required to work shifts, some alone, during term to provide 12 hours a day operational cover.

Current role holder: John Thompson
