Alumni Photography Competition at the Department of Engineering 2008

The winning photo

Rocks, Rigs and Roughnecks Edith Lagendijk
'Rocks, Rigs and Roughnecks'

View of the derrick from the dog-house. All machinery in the derrick is remotely controlled by the driller in his little shack (dog-house) on the drill floor. A massive pulley system (top drive) is used to connect the drillpipe to drill a hole to explore for and produce oil and gas. On this rig we were drilling a 4 kilometre long production well for an oil development off the North-west coast of Australia.

'A practical field lesson in resolving vectors, Rally Barbados 2007'

"The image is from 2007 Rally Barbados, a two-day, closed public road, tarmac rally around the Caribbean island of Barbados. The photo is unadulterated. The photo is a rally stage called 'Malvern East' and was taken by a friend Carlin Gerbich. The driver of the car (rhs of car) is indeed myself! The car is my own and was constructed by me."

Grandfey-Viaduct Rainer Spiegel
'Grandfey-Viaduct'

This photo is taken inside the Grandfey-Viaduct, which is one of the largest railway bridges in Switzerland and lies on the railway line between Berne and Fribourg, where I used to live for a while before coming to Cambridge. It crosses the valley of the river Saane and was steel-constructed between 1858 and 1862. Concrete was added to the steel construction between 1925 and 1927, because trains had become faster and heavier. Interestingly, there are letters in the concrete on the left hand side. The graffity spans the letters NUS, which is the French word for Naked (perhaps an association of its naked-concrete-look). Another interesting aspect about this viaduct is that on the western side of the bridge, people speak French. On the eastern side of the Bridge, people speak German.

Rig and flare Lisa Norcross
'Rig and flare'

This photo was taken on the top level of an oil platform in the North Sea on a very rare sunny day. The focal point is the flare and you can see the rig used for drilling/wellwork and scaffolding in the foreground.
