2005 Eminent Speaker - Dr Hugh Hunt

Presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation to Dr Hunt (Right) by the College Chairman, Col (Rtd) Michael Ford at his talk in Canberra on the 23rd August.

Dr Hunt entertained audiences in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne & Adelaide on his recent Eminent Speaker Tour for the College held between the 22nd and 26th August this year.

Blowing on bottles, throwing of boomerangs and spinning of bicycle wheels were all used to demonstrate principles of vibration and accoustics during Dr Hunt's talks on Counter-intutive Problems in Vibration and The Wonderful Physics of Gyroscopes and Boomerangs. Dr Hunt also addressed audiences in Sydney and Brisbane on his world-renowned research on Vibration from Underground Railways.

Dr Hunt is a lecturer at Cambridge University where he has the divided interests of studying dynamical systems and the education of engineers in the design of dynamical systems. He has received substantial grants for the study of existing rail systems and the design of new ones. The work of his research group is focused on developing methods for reducing noise and vibration generated by railway trains, especially in underground tunnels. The project involves analytical and numerical modelling of the track and tunnel and their interaction with the ground. The project is of considerable interest to all urban railway operators in Europe and elsewhere.
